This article reports that Britain is top of the list for child and teen drunks and that Brits now drink more even than the Russians.
Sad, sad news. I love England, and hate to see this.

Good grief. It seems like every time poor old England is mentioned by this blog it is to show her up as a drink sodden wreck, but we don’t live in a modern day Hogarth cartoon, you know; in my little corner of the country, inner city London, even at midnight on a Friday or Saturday it is quite possible to walk through town without meeting hoards of alcohol fuelled ne’er-do-wells or boozy blackguards!
I’ll concur with that notion of London [but try and get a post-football or rugby match train out of the City and you’ll witness reprehensible activities beyond imagining]It’s our major towns and cities outside the major metropoleis [metropolein ? my greek is awful]that the problem has turned into a nightmare…one thing I can say though with gratitude – for some reason the violence and nocturnal over-the-top activities have significantly diminished ever since the youth have been pushed out of their main gathering-places by pedestrian eastern europeans walking the streets [to and from work at all hours or out with their young families] and using civic amenities like parks etc.
We have a problem with the drunk youth in our town on some week nights and weekends and as England is probably the abortion capital of the world this may be a root of the UK’s drunken stupor – so many young girls and women have had abortions – the guilt and trauma can manifest itself in this way. There are groups in our town that go from the nightclubs to pubs shoving free condoms in all the young peoples hands and when the condoms fail (as many of them do) the young girls who have had abortions deal with the pain in many ways – turning to drink being one of them. Perhaps this is a root of the UK’s decent? That and of course the total rejection of Christian Faith and Morals by some families so that the young people flee their homes and gather in the streets with bottles of drink to be ‘cool’ and numb the emptiness. Please remember England in your Mass Intentions Father – I love England too but she is turning so far away from Christ that she is heading for self-destruction. However, while England is not quite a perfect effigy of Sodom and Gomorrah yet I’d love to see a blog on what you do love about England.

This is not new: the English long have had a reputation as violent and drunken louts! The cartoons of Hogarth are testimony to this, and foreign visitors to Victorian London were astonished at the violence of the mobs, the drunken squalor and numbers of prostitutes. For a century the Victorian Evangelical temperance movement managed to sober the country up, but alas we have fallen back into our old ways again..
Indeed, I recently came upon a fascinating account of Dostoevsky’s visit to London. He said the prostitutes in Haymarket were as thick as flies on a corpse. Women offering their daughters etc. etc.
