Today is the feast day of the English Martyrs. My favorites are Cuthbert Mayne–an Anglican convert clergyman and Nicholas Owen–the little guy who built the priest holes.
Here’s a full list of the Catholic martyrs killed by the Tudor/Anglican regime…and lest we be too triumphalistic, let us also remember those courageous Protestants who also stood up for their beliefs during the time of Mary Tudor.
UPDATE: Whoops. My mistake. Oct 25 is the anniversary of the canonization of the Martyrs of England and Wales, and it used to be the feast day. The Feast Day is now May 4, but the feast is not universal.
