Excellent article!I’m curious about when the “fellowship meal” theology began, because I grew up (in the 1970s) with the priest facing the people, but the accompanying catechesis was very much about Christ’s sacrifice. I wonder if that is still true?
In my church there is a life-sized crucifix on the wall immediately behind and above the altar. It faces the congregation–Surprise!–, and I have to say that that fact trivializes the celebrant’s orientation, and that it helps one focus on the Centrality of the sacrifice of the Mass. I guess one is just lucky.
Good stuff, Fr. Dwight. I have commented on my blog:http://vagantepriest.blogspot.com/2008/10/fr-dwight-on-liturgical-sacrifice.html
