I don’t like the self description as ‘Shaman,’ but what I really find outrageous is the quote: “But that our commitment to the church as institution — well, we could take it or leave it.”I think that they should leave it….
I suppose it’s true that [Catholic/Orthodox] priests and shaman (as well as pagan priests) both act as intermediaries between between the profane and the sacred, but the similarity likely ends there. What is sacred differs. What is Deity/God differs, as well as what He, or they require. The scope of function differs. The differences between orthodox Christianity postmodern Christianity are becoming quite stark. But this Episcopagan silliness is too much. If someone’s going to claim shaman status, I’m going want to see pedigree that goes much deeper than something someone pulled out of their hat within the past couple of generations. Likewise if someone’s claiming to be a priest, I’ll expect pedigree, i.e. valid ordination within apostolic succession.
If they can take it or leave it, why don’t they just leave it? Sheesh. And I’m with Mickemlixix. If they want to be shamans, let’s see their credentials. You can’t just claim to be a shaman, any more than you can just claim to be a priest! Wait… maybe that’s where they got the idea.
