They are deacons, not priests, and they are helping to hold his cope as he walks for two reasons: the cope is embroidered with silver and gold thread and heavy slabs of embroidered work. It’s valuable and shouldn’t drag on the floor. Secondly, he’s an old man, and a cope like that is heavy. He would barely be able to shoulder it himself.
That`s a mighty mitre, isn`t it. Makes you proud to be Catholic. His garb has got markedly more tasteful very recently, hasn`t it, or is that my imagination…
The papal regalia still always seems gaudy to me. I can’t help wondering if Peter would have ever been caught dead in such acutriments.

Now that our Holy Father has given the boot to Archbishop Piero Marini, the Vatican’s leading liturgical adulterator for the past generation, some semblance of reverence and devotion is returning to the papal liturgies. As soon as the Holy Father begins celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass in public on a regular basis, the return will be complete.
I think that reading this in the Scriptures puts this image of the pope being supported by two deacons in a new light:”Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; and whenever he lowered his hand, Am’alek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” – Exodus 17:11-12
I was once told off by a priest for simply admiring a cope. I wasn’t being OTT about it, I just said it was very beautiful. I wonder what that priest is making of the current changes in Papal vesture?(BTW, the cope in question is Portsmouth (RC) Cathedral’s 1901 Paris Exhibition Cope, made entirely of gold thread and depicting various mysteries of the Rosary. The Coronation adorns the hood of the cope. At the time that I saw it, the jewelled morse had been “misplaced”.)
Keep in mind he is German. They have always been very snappy dressers and as a people, suckers for an elaborate uniform. Remember those pointed WWI helments?
