The new book I am working on is called Beheading Hydra: A Battle Plan for Christians in an Atheistic World. The first half of the book lays out twelve “ism’s” that are the foundation of our culture–born as it is from the enlightenment. These “ism’s” are in three categories “The World, The Flesh and The Devil”. The second half of the book is “So what are you going to do about it?”
I’m just about half way through and the first half was the most difficult half. I remember reading that C.S.Lewis said Screwtape Letters was one the one hand the easiest book he wrote but on the other hand the most unpleasant. He felt all grubby trying to think like the devil and see the world through dragon’s eyes. The first half of this book was a bit like that. The second half is going to be clear sailing.
I think this book, like Immortal Combat will really speak to where we are right now. Many people are bewildered, confused and afraid for many reasons–the pandemic, the economic uncertainty, the contentious presidential election and ambiguities and uncertainties from the highest level of the Catholic Church. By understanding the underlying heresies and lies folks should be able to see more clearly what is going on and how to move forward.
The subtitle is “A Battle Plan for Christians in an Atheistic World” because I am realizing more and more that the underlying philosophies in our society, while they are not explicitly atheistic, are in fact, totally atheistic. The book will explain why they are and expose the thinking behind the current philosophies and lifestyles–explaining where these lies come from and how they fit together. That’s where they title comes from. “Beheading Hydra” refers to the mythical beast The Hydra–a venomous monster from the swamps that has many snakelike heads. Once one is cut off two more grow in its place.
The book will be published by Sophia Institute Press, and if I can get it done by the end of January it may be ready by the Spring.
A few prayers from blog readers would not go amiss!
Father,
I am looking forward to this new book. My small men’s group finished Immortal Combat a month ago. There were some interesting conversations during our discussions but all were impressed with the book and agreed that it should be must reading in these times.
Thank you for all you do.
Jeff
Sounds terrific. When people ascribe to an entirely materialistic view of the world, they are at a loss to comprehend evil or even name it as we live in a virtue free society.
