We went to the circus last night with the kids and some friends. I love the circus. There’s something ancient and earthy and common about it. It’s more high tech now, but it’s still the same entertainment that has been around since Roman times: acrobats, lovely ladies, brave men, wild beasts, magicians, clowns, spangly costumes, special effects, lights and music.
What could be more fun that seeing two pretty ladies being shot out of a cannon and flying across the room, or watching eleven elephants stand on their heads, or twelve Chinese acrobats do astounding leaps and bounds? There were dogs who could walk on their front legs, dancing tigers slapstick and magic tricks where people were cut in half…
Quite wonderful really.
the circus scares me… its like being drunk on acid at chucky cheese.horrific.
Isn’t that odd…I was just today talking to my wife about many of the small circuses I’ve seen (in addition to The Big One), and how even these smaller ones have many of the thrills, all the magic, and usually more intimate performances. I suppose I want to encourage everyone to give the littl’uns a try if they haven’t yet.BTW, years ago we attended the Tsirk (Circus) in Moscow. It had a one-ring permanent arena, and we still recall the charming and frightening acts we saw that evening. I’d rate the Moscow Circus the #1 thing to see there, ahead of Red Square and the rest.
You are lucky to still have a proper circus in the USA. In the UK it is no longer legal to have any sort of animal acts so, apart from the clowns – who are always something of acrobats anyway – circus is now basically reduced to different troupes of acrobats doing their thing!
