During my visit to Italy last summer we went to the convent of Bosco ai Frati to view the astounding crucifix by Donatello pictured here. If you’re shocked by the carving you should be, and you should remember that Our Lord was crucified naked and suffered total humiliation.

I wrote this poem in response

Naked Christ

 

This second Adam

was the I AM

This sacred Adam

became a man.

This naked Adam

is what I am.

This broken Adam

became the Lamb.
