London’s Daily Telegraph reports here on the plight of Meriam Ibrahim–a Sudanese Christian woman who is pregnant and has been sentenced to death for renouncing Islam. She is being held in a Sudanese jail along with her infant son.

An eight-months pregnant woman is being kept shackled to the wall of her cell as she awaits hanging, her husband has said after visiting her in prison.

Meriam Ibrahim, 26, was sentenced to death in Sudan on Thursday for refusing to recant her Christianity and for marrying Christian Daniel Wani – a Sudanese man with US citizenship who lives in New Hampshire

The court found her guilty of apostasy – leaving Islam – even though Miss Ibrahim testified that she was never a Muslim, and was brought up as a Christian by her Ethiopia-born mother.

The case was drawn to the authorities’ attention in August, when Miss Ibrahim’s father’s family said that she had been born a Muslim and renounced Islam. Fatih Izz Al-Deen, Sudanese parliament speaker, said Miss Ibrahim’s brother had denounced her.

“I was never a Muslim,” she told the court. “I was raised a Christian from the start.”

You can sign a petition of support for Meriam here. What I find curious about this case is the lack of comment from the White House. I may be wrong, and I’m happy to be corrected, but has the President or Mrs Obama mentioned this case at all? Has the President asked the State Department to be involved?

I remember when the African American teenager Trayvon Martin was shot by a Hispanic man. The President was front and center to take the cause of the Martin family and sympathize. Why the silence on this horrible case of a pregnant woman being shackled to a wall–imprisoned with her infant son while her wheelchair bound  American citizen husband remains helpless?

Our President is usually very helpful when it comes to taking a public stand for victims of injustice, the marginalized, minorities, the helpless, the disabled and the young.

Furthermore, doesn’t the State Department have a duty to assist an American citizen whose family are in trouble abroad?  Maybe stuff is happening in diplomatic circles that we don’t know about, but shouldn’t we hear something?

I’m starting to believe the hyped up Facebook conspiracy theorists who say Obama is secretly sympathetic to the Islamic religion and this is why he is silent when the evidence of Islamic persecution of Christians surfaces. Could this also explain the propaganda which tries to portray Boko Haram as simply a revolutionary group rather than a group of explicitly Islamic terrorism? Little mention is made of the fact that Boko Haram is Muslim and the kidnapped girls of Nigeria are Christian.
