I saw the whole world
in a brown sparrow.
This lonely bird held
all joy and sorrow,
love, hope and loss
as he perched on the cross
beams of a lamp post
in the road. Then a host
of his fellows flew
and he was gone–
a universe with wings
lost in a crowded afternoon.
