Universal Sparrow

I saw the whole world
in a brown sparrow.
This lonely bird held
all joy and sorrow,
love, hope and loss
as he perched on the cross
beams of a lamp post
in the road. Then a host
of his fellows flew
and he was gone–

a universe with wings
lost in a crowded afternoon.

They make perfect Christmas presents. The poems are accessible and like this one, are not explicitly ‘religious’. Instead they convey a sacramental vision of the world in little glimpses.
