Over the summer when I was blogging pretty consistently on the horrors of present day Anglianism I was chided for ignoring Catholic awful-ness. This blog has had its fair share of Catholic horror stories, but here’s one for the books from Creative Minority Report: a customer in the LA Catholic cathedral bookshop engages in a conversation with a sales person who thinks devil worshippers are welcome at the cathedral too.
Devil Worship at LA Cathedral?

Yes, such unbelievable beliefs are prevalent (to what extent?) in the church. My own take is that certain Catholics end up thinking in this way through not wishing to believe in an eternal hell.I knew a priest. One thing that came up rather regularly in our conversations was his speculation about there being an eternal hell. One time he told me, concerning the state of the demons and the devil: “They are on their own spiritual journey”. Meaning “hell” is just a kind of reincarnating purgatory, and that the fallen demons are simply in state of getting better, like us, or getting into heaven, or something. I faintly remember being creeped out of my flesh on hearing this.He said many other things of this sort. About black magic, tantric rites, astro-body travel, or whatever-the-frick it is called. To him it was all neutral. A Catholic priest. We must remember: The fact that we have the greatest of gifts, Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, in the tabernacle of every Catholic church, means the forces of hell are attracted to it, in order to desecrate it, and those who are in its ‘sanctuary’, if they do not stay awake and realize they have to fight, will be tempted to fall. And when they fall it is not the fall of someone who has never known better. The fall is horrible. Like Shakespeare says: Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.
Niggle, I love that quote from Shakespeare. Do tell where it’s from. Pearce could’ve used it in his Quest for Shakespeare.Actually, one of the most revered theologians, beloved of JPII and BXVI, suggested very strongly that there is no hell. Hans Urs Von Balthasar.
Estiel,Sonnet 94They that have power to hurt and will do none, That do not do the thing they most do show, Who, moving others, are themselves as stone, Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow, They rightly do inherit heaven’s graces And husband nature’s riches from expense; They are the lords and owners of their faces, Others but stewards of their excellence. The summer’s flower is to the summer sweet, Though to itself it only live and die, But if that flower with base infection meet, The basest weed outbraves his dignity: For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds; Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds. ***I haven’t read Hans Urs Von Balthasar – but have heard such things. I would be interested in reading some quotes that pertain to this. Does it come from his writing on Christ’s descent into hell?I do of course subscribe to the notion that hell is of its own making, and that God does not “punish” a soul with hell. I believe every person is predestined for Heaven. Yet hell is an objective reality, not a subjective state. And hell has a ruler, Satan. In a sense, hell must be hell, simply because it is not Heaven: the total fulfillment of what we are made for. Heaven cannot ultimately be Heaven if, outside of it, there was some place resolved not to getting there (into Heaven) and yet remain not painful.
Thanks, Niggle (as in “Leaf by…” perhaps).Hell is a mystery to me–as is Heaven, actually, though the concept of Beatific Vision is as heavenly as my limited imagination can grasp.I think most people believe they’ll be in Purgatory.I do.Balthasar is too profound for me.
Devil worshippers, why not?Around NOLA, there’s Catholics who practice voodoo without any qualms of conscience.Bad catechesis and bad preaching have a price.
Well, that’s just wonderful!California is one of the pits of the earth (my apologies to anyone who resides there.). It needs a major kick in the pants!-g-
