Marco Tossati writes here at First Things saying what many people are thinking–that there is a plot to get rid of Cardinal Sarah.

What? Machiavellian maneuverings at the Vatican? Surely some mistake! Surely these are just evil rumors–like the one that Cardinal Pell was brought down with false charges because he was trying to clean up the Vatican Bank. Surely some mistake! Or that Cardinal Muller was kicked out as soon as possible because he was orthodox and opposed Pope Francis. Or that there is a team of second string curial officials, sycophantic journalists and obscure theologians who tweet and write articles stirring up the plot against Cardinal Sarah?

You know, its not really necessary to dwell on these rumors. Even if all of it is true, so what? What are you going to do about it? Cry yourself to sleep? Get angry and doubt your faith? Gossip and stir up more trouble and disloyalty to the church? Cause scandal by doing so?

We should do what we can do with what we have where we are. Mind our own business and build the kingdom in our families, in our schools, in our parishes, in our businesses and in our communities. We should do so confidently and joyfully, proclaiming the gospel in our words and our works where things are real–at the local level.

That’s what we will be judged on–not on some skullduggery in the halls of the Vatican. Dark secrets in high places? That, like the poor, you shall always have with you.
