Over at Patheos today I’ve posted a critique of the liberal handling of the magi story.

The short version is that the liberal scholars dismiss the magi story as legend and myth manufactured by Matthew (whoever he was) to make Jesus more special.

But their theory is full of myth and midrash itself. Midrash, by the way, is an embroidered story or made up story to illustrate or comment an Old Testament preaching point.

So frightened of the magi story’s historicity are the New Testament scholars that several of them told me that you daren’t suggest that the story might just, possibly have a historical foundation if you want to be taken seriously. The eminent New Testament Catholic scholar Raymond Brown admitted as much in his definitive work The Birth of the Messiah.
